This annual award was created by TiE Silicon Valley board members to recognize individuals who embody outstanding contribution, global impact and transformational leadership
Sunnyvale, CA, April 26, 2016 (Newswire.com) - TiE Silicon Valley, a not for profit organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship in the Bay Area and globally, today announced that its board members have created the new, high profile “Lifetime Achievement Award” to recognize individuals who embody outstanding contribution, global impact and transformational leadership. The inaugural award will be conferred at TiE Silicon Valley’s annual banquet at the conclusion of TiEcon 2016, scheduled for May 7, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
After careful consideration, the TiE Silicon Valley board of directors has named Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, former CEO and current Executive Chairman of Qualcomm Incorporated, as the 2016 award recipient. “On behalf of 13,000 members of TiE spread across 18 countries, we are proud to confer the inaugural ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ on Dr. Paul E. Jacobs,” stated Venktesh Shukla, President, TiE SV, and Chair, TiE Global. “Dr. Jacobs is an innovator and entrepreneur in his own right and has played a transformational role in the mobile industry with his vision and leadership.”
“I am truly honored to be the inaugural recipient of this Lifetime Achievement Award from TiE,” said Dr. Jacobs. “For the past 30 years, I have been fortunate to collaborate with many passionate innovators at Qualcomm and throughout the mobile industry. Together, we have built the wireless Internet into humanity's most widespread technology platform.”
Dr. Jacobs has been granted more than 50 patents related to wireless technology and devices. Important developments that began under Dr. Jacobs include the first smartphone based on Palm OS, inclusion of GPS capabilities in mobile phones, and the BREW mobile platform. Dr. Jacobs’ belief in fostering a culture that goes against consensus, has conviction and is willing to take risks transformed the culture within Qualcomm, empowering engineers to innovate and work on new ideas, some of which took the company in new and bold directions.
Dr. Jacobs currently holds the following positions:
Chair of the US-Korea Business Council and the Advisory Board of the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley, where he inaugurated the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation
Vice Chairman and Co-owner of the NBA Sacramento Kings
Member of the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum
Member of the US-India CEO Forum
Board of Directors member for FIRST, OneWeb and Light
