Some Key Findings of the Report

The Business Research Company’s report “Touch Screen Market Globally 2015” finds that the market has been characterised by extreme fragmentation both in technology and in supply chain.  Ten years of double-digit growth in both units and revenues, combined with relatively low barriers to entry, have encouraged a huge number of suppliers.  At the same time there has been no ‘one-size-fits-all’ technology solution, with several different technology approaches meeting the needs of different categories of device or usage scenario.  However, since 2009, one approach, projective captive, (PCAP) has captured the highest-volume touch categories of mobile phones and tablets. 

With penetration into mobile phones now largely accomplished, touch market unit growth is set to slow, and protective captive suppliers will seek to dominate other, larger size device categories in order to maintain growth.  The Business Research Company’s analysis suggests that the technology is now ready for mid-sized PCAP touch panels (resistance issues have been improved for ITO-based and metal mesh is ready for mass manufacture), so there are now few obstacles to its domination.  This will contribute to significant pressure on suppliers that are not at the leading edge of PCAP.

A key trend established by our discussion with senior industry figures is the move towards embedded touch panels over the forecast period (2015-2020), and in particular to In-cell technology.  The causes are the low cost structure of In-cell, due to the elimination of expensive processes and materials, and the desire of display makers to capture a higher share of the overall revenues available.  As such, display makers such as JDI, Sharp and Innolux will join the ranks of the major touch panel producers, whilst specialist suppliers will see their market share squeezed.

Costs of touch panel production will continue to fall sharply, especially in key components such as the sensors and cover glass.  Declining prices of key ITO and the increased availability of alternatives lead The Business Research Company to forecast that protective captive production costs using traditional approaches will fall sharply by 2020.  Embedded technologies and in-cell in particular, offer even greater cost-downs for small-size consumer touch panels.  A combination of cost-downs and lower margins due to increased competition will result in sharp price declines.  We forecast overall touch panel market revenue will grow much more slowly than unit volume.

We expect many diversified companies will deprioritise touch panel production in coming years as margins contract or turn negative.  In our profiles of touch panel suppliers we have given priority to the financial position and sustainability of each supplier (where available) as The Business Research Company believes this should be a key consideration in the choice of long-term suppliers.

Each touch technology requires a healthy ecosystem of component makers, touch panel suppliers and distributors to be attractive to long-term customers.  As PCAP encroaches on the mid-sized segment, which has traditionally been the mainstay of Surface Accoustic Wave (SAW) and Surface Capacitive (SCAP) technologies, the supply base in those technologies is likely to shrink.
