The Palma Foundation Continues to Help The Salvation Army in Bradenton Meet Some of Its Most Pressing Needs
Online, April 19, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The Palma Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering disadvantaged women and helping them improve their lives and their children's futures, has committed to working with The Salvation Army on 14th Street West in Bradenton to meet some of their most pressing needs. Last month, the Palma Foundation donated a 52-inch LCD television for the facility's common area. In December 2011, the foundation donated a large-screen television for the family lodge residential area, which houses five families and six single residents, and donated 4 cases of canned vegetables and 15 turkeys to provide holiday meals for The Salvation Army's residents.
"We are excited about the opportunities offered through our new relationship with The Palma Foundation," said Christine Smith, The Salvation Army's Director of Community Relations and Development. "Our families are enjoying the new television during movie nights, and the food donations help support our food pantry, which relies on contributions from organizations like The Palma Foundation to help those in our community who are facing food insecurity."
The Palma Foundation, which was formed in 2007, was the inspiration of the late Mary Palma Sandoro, who dedicated her life to raising her seven children, then entered college in her late 40s to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Development. She worked with special needs children until she retired from teaching, then wrote and published a cookbook and donated the proceeds to charity, and remained an active supporter of charitable organizations until her death in 2011 at age 87.
David Sandoro, a spokesman for The Palma Foundation and Mary's second-youngest son, said, "My mother grew up as one of nine children in a working class Italian family in Buffalo. She always spoke highly of The Salvation Army's mission to help people in need, and she wanted to contribute to the work they do, especially for disadvantaged women and children. I'm honored to help this important organization in honor of her memory."
