The Next Battlefield In The Assault On Women's Reproductive Rights
Online, March 15, 2014 (Newswire.com) - One of the hottest of hot-button topics these days is the war on abortion. Many states have chosen to pass tighter restrictions on the ability to have one, and they are crafting their legislation to make sure it stands up to scrutiny by the courts. Emboldened by these successes, some states have now turned their eye towards the act of childbirth itself, introducing new laws that take away some control of how a woman chooses to give birth from the woman herself and gives that power to the state. This very topic was the focus of an open forum interactive discussion hosted by Katie Klabusich and Rebecca Westbrook Toker on Thursday March 13th.
"It should come as no surprise to anyone that Arizona is the first state that is trying to ban midwives from doing the very job they have been trained to do," Ms. Westbrook Toker, a trained midwife, said when it was announced she would be Ms. Klabusich's special guest for this conversation which will be held in an online discussion format. "They are known for their aggressive legislation to limit social services, and have already passed a law that allows doctors to withhold important medical information if they believe that it may lead to a woman choosing to terminate her pregnancy. This new law is just another step towards taking control away from the woman and elevating the rights of the fetus over those of the mother."
Arizona Senator Kelli Ward who is sponsoring the bill agrees one hundred percent with that statement and says that is the reason the bill should pass. If it becomes law, it will force women to have their deliveries only in hospitals and outlaw midwives from assisting with delivery in any way. Such a law raises any number of questions, all of which will be addressed next Thursday at 9:00pm on Tawkers.com, the industry leader when it comes to providing open forum interactive discussions. Thanks to the real time commentary that accompanies their forums, Ms. Westbrook Toker and Ms. Klabusich will be able to see what the listeners are saying and address their questions and concerns as they arise in hopes to shed some more light on this important and timely subject.
