The New Goodwill Ambassador
Online, October 1, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The leading tennis star before stepping into her thirties has made yet another mark. She has recently been picked to be the goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. UNICEF is a remarkable forum for the child welfare.
Serena Williams will turn 30 by the end of September, and much before that good news is pouring in. she has received the honor by the charity. It is her "generous philanthropic endeavors off the court that make her a dynamic individual even off the court." Serena Williams has worked with UNICEF earlier as well in 2006. It was an initiative to furnish medical facilities for suffering kids in Ghana. Ms Williams is in tune with other ambassadors like David Beckham and Audrey Hepburn. These famous personalities too have been the goodwill ambassadors for the charity.
Williams herself feels ecstatic about this responsibility been bestowed on her. As she says, she is going to make use of her stardom to improve the plight of children across the developing nations. "I believe all children deserve the chance to make something of their lives... I am committed to helping UNICEF provide a quality education to children to help them build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities," said the superstar.
Upon this privilege being extended to her, the UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said, ""Serena Williams isn't just a world tennis champion, she is a champion for children - and a passionate advocate for providing every child with a quality education... We are delighted that Serena is joining us as UNICEF's newest Goodwill Ambassador and look forward to working together to win for children." The speech came while Lake extended his welcome to the ace tennis player.
Williams has won 13 grand slams and has also grabbed the gold medals at 2000 and 2008 Olympics.
