The Learning Alliance Builds Its Professional Network

October was a busy month for The Learning Alliance, as they hosted leaders in education to observe their programs in action, and learn more about the progress of The Learning Alliance.

Dean Feuer of George Washington University and members of his staff visited our classrooms at Glendale Elementary on October 6, 2011, followed by a TLA presentation to discuss our innovative programs. Dean Feuer remarked; "The willingness by all parties for reform, as well as the relationship that The Learning Alliance has with the School District, is extraordinary." He added that, "the School District of Indian River County and The Learning Alliance are saving an entire generation in Vero Beach." The Learning Alliance is discussing a future partnership, including having doctoral students from GW conduct an ethnographic study of our initiatives.

The Learning Alliance hosted author Anthony Pedriana, author of Leaving Johnny Behind on October 10, 2011. Pedriana spoke to our Reading Coaches and administrators and moderated a conference call with philanthropists discussing his book. Pedriana is a retired principal from Minnesota who has spent several years studying the literacy reform efforts across our country.

On October 12, 2011, The Learning Alliance hosted David Montague, retired principal and industry leader in education reform. Montague shared his success in achieving 90% literacy while principal with the Kennewick School District in Washington state. Montague spoke to District principals and key administrators.

The Learning Alliance was pleased to present their programs on October 28, 2011, to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, well known for its support of non-profits that serve children in poverty. This is an important connection for The Learning Alliance.
