The Breanna Vergara Foundation Hosts Inaugural 5K and Color Run to Create Awareness of Pediatric Heart Health

Over 1,100 Participants Pre-Registered in Support of South Florida Non-Profit Organization Race Event

​​The inaugural Breanna Vergara 5K & Color Run (#BVF5K) will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West (15101 N.W. 82nd Avenue, Miami Lakes, Florida 33016). Over 1,100 participants have already pre-registered and on-site race day registration will be open from 6:00a.m.–7:15a.m. The timed 5K Run/Walk will begin at 7:30a.m. and Billy the Marlin (official mascot of the Miami Marlins) will kick-off the One-Mile Color Run at 8:30a.m. The event will include fun family activities, music, entertainment, and will feature recording artist Teenear singing the National Anthem. At the conclusion of the races, an awards ceremony will commence, with top finishers receiving prizes.

The #BVF5K is presented by The Breanna Vergara Foundation, a non-profit organization established by Jesus and Claudia Vergara in memory of their 11-year old daughter Breanna Marie, who unexpectedly passed away from sudden cardiac arrest. “Our seemingly healthy daughter had an unknown, asymptomatic heart condition which, when detected with an electrocardiogram (EKG), is curable. Early detection is crucial and helping to identify children at risk of sudden cardiac arrest is one of our foundation’s missions. To hear a child say, ‘Breanna Vergara saved my life’ is our daughter’s greatest legacy.”

The foundation is focused on promoting a healthy, happy, and passionate lifestyle by offering scholarships for children to participate in extracurricular activities while also creating awareness of the importance of pediatric heart health, making pediatric heart screenings readily available to all children, providing life-saving Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to all places where children are active, and contributing to Nicklaus Children's Hospital for the funding of a mobile EKG unit. ABOUT THE BREANNA VERGARA FOUNDATION

Jesus and Claudia Vergara established The Breanna Vergara Foundation after the unexpected death of their 11-year-old daughter, Bre-Bre, a healthy middle school student and avid dancer who collapsed during dance practice due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect that caused sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
