The Amplify, Inc. Team Trains with a Sports-Minded Attitude

The managers at Amplify, Inc. train their team to have a sports mentality. According to Korey, the firm's director, this is an effective way to develop healthy competition within the office.

For the innovative marketing and consulting services firm, leadership and passion are extremely important. One of the ways that the company’s management team fosters these is to teach a sports mentality to their associates. “There are a lot of parallels between sports and business,” Korey elaborated. “They are both team activities in which people are competing against each other in order to succeed. While winning may not be as clearly defined in business, it requires both the team and the individual to have talent and drive, just like with sports.”

This approach is clearly working, which is evidenced by the fact that Amplify, Inc. has been continuously expanding its portfolio. Korey reported that his team has never been more motivated. “A sense of competition can be a great thing,” he added. “It just makes each day a little bit more exciting. I think that coming into work and feeling energized is essential to success and generally being happy in life.”

Amplify, Inc.’s Director Explains How to Foster Healthy Competition

Korey pointed out that creating the right sense of competition is essential, but that too much without enough respect can lead to a very toxic environment. He shared some of the secrets that have worked for him at Amplify, Inc. “It’s important to celebrate and encourage risk,” he said. “If you make a mistake in business, most likely no one is going to die. Remember that there is room to take risks and try new things, just like with sports.”

“I also strongly recommend making goal setting and achievement recognition key parts of your business operations,” Korey continued. “Set and communicate clear goals about what you want your team to achieve. This gives everyone something to work toward together. Then, whenever your team makes good progress, highlight some of the individuals who really went above and beyond.”

Korey also added that ownership should be a central aspect of the company culture. At Amplify, Inc., everyone is encouraged to take charge of their work and to feel proud of their results. “This is great because everyone wants to really show off what they can do; however, they also know to support others and help them accomplish their goals as well. This type of behavior is indicative of true sportsmanship.”
