"The mission of the charity promises to make a difference locally," says Thompson. "Also, they are immensely thankful for the generosity and compassion of the membership partners of Berkeley Hall. They make all of these grants possible."

History of the Foundation

The Berkeley Hall community has a deep history of humanitarianism in the Lowcountry. The Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s mission is to "Make a difference by addressing the basic human needs of the greater Bluffton Community, especially those who are most vulnerable."

The vision came to life through the kindness and engagement of the Berkeley Hall membership. Also, their desire to make a difference in the neighborhood.

Since its conception in 2008, Berkeley Hall Charitable Fund has made 80 grants totaling over $800,000 through the exceptional support of the membership group. The group becomes honored to help those worthy organizations. Also, they make essential strides in improving the lives of the most helpless members of the community.

The Berkeley Hall Charitable Fund became established under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, a 501(c)(3) charitable group located on Hilton Head Island. Also, in 2014, the fund established its own 501(c)(3) and became administrated by volunteers of a Board of Trustees and the Berkeley Hall Board of Directors.

Money raised from member donations, Charity Cup functions, and other fundraising efforts become awarded to local nonprofit groups. Also, these associations become selected through a rigorous grant application and evaluation process.

Furthermore, the funds gathered during this year's Memorial Day event drove the total funds raised by the organization from $800,000 to over $1 million.

"Every year, more caring citizens donate to the group, and the total amount of money raises," adds Terry Sloan Thompson.

The money fostered by the 2017 Berkeley Hall Charity Cup will fund worthy projects in 2018 to support Bluffton's most vulnerable residents.

Past grant beneficiaries have included: Bluffton Self-Help, Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine, Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton, Child Abuse Prevention Association, Meals on Wheels, The Children's Center, Hope Haven with Citizen's Opposed to Domestic Abuse, Deep Well, Family Promise, Heroes on Horseback, Backpack Buddies of Bluffton, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, The Literacy Center, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, Memory Matters, Second Helpings, Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island, Neighborhood Outreach Connection, and Programs for Exceptional People.

Weekend of Events for Donors

The weekend event promises competitive golf, good company, and fun for members who donated. Also, the weekend is kicked off with an opening cocktail and silent auction on Friday. The gathering's sponsor, Audi Hilton Head, showcases many luxury performance vehicles.

On Saturday, the Berkeley Hall clubhouse hosts a Gala featuring an open bar, silent and live auctions, and a raffle. Also, the evening event has become the standard in ending a day of golf at the course.

In the clubhouse on Saturday, the tournament begins. Also, the shotgun start begins and features low gross and low net prizes, hole-in-one prizes, and a variety of on-course contests.

"While the weekend has become a staple of fun and competitive golf, the mission does not sway from their purpose," says Terry Sloan Thompson. "Every person that participates that weekend has donated. Also, they become a valuable member of a group that improves lives to those less fortunate. Furthermore, I hope to stay involved for many years to come."
