Tariq Drabu said "US Scientists have been studying human microbiome in relation to a host of diseases, which could result in a prevention for periodontal disease."

Tariq Drabu is a Manchester born and educated dentist and specialist oral surgeon, he is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom at twenty one years of age. He worked in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia before receiving his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr Drabu is now the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. Passionate about education, he also finds time in his busy schedule to tutor and mentor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on a leading dental website on 27 August 2014. The full article can be read on Dental-Tribune.

Tariq Drabu said “US Scientists in Austin, Texas have been studying human microbiome in relation to various diseases including diabetes, obesity and periodontitis. They have revealed that oral bacteria differs when compared in healthy and diseased patients. This could result in a way to combat or reverse periodontal disease, which is a severe gum disease that when ignored, could results in tooth loss.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say “The research conducted studied dental plaque from ten patients to understand how bacteria acts in healthy and diseased patients, this resulted in the scientists comparing over one hundred thousand genes. I am hoping this research helps the scientists find a prevention for periodontitis, but in the meantime it is important that patients are aware of the symptoms of this disease, enabling them to seek treatment as early as possible.”

Tariq Drabu in Manchester closed in saying “With treatment, periodontitis can be controlled with good results when caught early on. At Langley Dental Practice we recommend all our patients attend regular routine dental check-ups, which enable us, as dental professionals to identify problems as early as possible. During a routine dental appointment we can look for gum disease, tooth decay and even mouth cancer symptoms, helping patients get the treatment they need as early as possible.”
