Tariq Drabu Discusses Sugar Free Gum to Save NHS Millions in 2016

Tariq Drabu said "The NHS could save in the region of £8.2 million if all twelve year olds were to chew sugar free gum three times a day in 2016."

Tariq Drabu is a Manchester born and educated dentist. He is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom at twenty one years of age. After graduation he worked in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia before receiving his Fellowship in Dentistry at the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Today he is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his exceptionally busy schedule to tutor and mentor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article recently published on a top dentistry news website. The full article, which was published on 12 February 2016, can be read here.

Tariq Drabu in Manchester said “£8.2 million could be the amount of money being saved by the NHS if all twelve year olds in the country chewed sugar free gum. A study which was recently published in the British Dental Journal shows that if twelve year olds were to chew one piece of sugar free gum each day, they could save the NHS £2.8 million.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say “This amount of savings was increased based on the number of pieces of sugar free gum was chewed. If twelve year olds were to chew two pieces per day, the NHS could save in the region of £3.3 million with that amount increasing to £8.2 million with three pieces per day.”

Tariq Drabu closed in saying “This is an innovative approach which is simple and effective and the cost savings was only carried out focusing on twelve year olds. Add other age groups into the mix and the savings on the NHS could be substantial moving forward. Sugar free gum is effective because it breaks down food left behind, it neutralises acids and reduces the risk of tooth decay. Sugar free gum has also proven to increase saliva flow and promote enamel remineralisation.”
