Tamara Molde Discusses the Impact of Promotional Products on Business

The promotional products industry is now worth in excess of $20 billion each year.

Approximately 90 percent of consumers have received at least one promotional product in the last six months according to a survey by PPAI, the Promotional Products Association International.

The same survey also reveals that, of individuals receiving promotional products, around 80 percent gained both a more favorable impression of the promoting brand, and deemed themselves more likely to do business with the brand in future.

These are all numbers which are familiar to Tamara Molde, owner and operator of Minnesota-based Ideas By Design, Inc.

Ideas By Design are producers of custom printed promotional products, often referred to as ad specialties, including apparel, bags, writing instruments, technology products, and drinkware.

"The numbers speak for themselves," says Molde of the PPAI survey.

"One of my favorite figures from the survey is that 81 percent of people who receive a promotional item keep it for more than 12 months," she adds.

"What's more," the Ideas By Design boss continues, "as many as 40 percent of people keep hold of promotional items for up to 10 years – sometimes even longer."

Indeed, the survey reveals that around 18 percent of respondents still had in their possession a promotional item which they originally received over a decade ago.

It's figures like these which have seen promotional products consistently ranked the number one form of advertising across the board in terms of return on investment. Promotional products beat both broadcast and print advertising, as well as online and mobile, as they pertain to prompting action from potential clients or customers.

"It's the same across all generational divides, too," remarks Tamara Molde. "Print and online, for example, often have wildly different rates of efficacy when comparing different age demographics. Promotional products, however, rank top across all of them."

She continues, "Reportedly, seven out of every ten brands, both large and small, consider promotional products to be not only effective but often fundamental in achieving their marketing goals."

Ideas By Design produces promotional products and ad specialties from over 3,000 suppliers, including t-shirts, jackets, tote bags, backpacks, pens and pencils, USB drives, Bluetooth items, water bottles, mugs, tumblers, and more.

PPAI's recent survey found that of the most popular promotional item categories, apparel accounts for around 30 percent of all products produced annually. Meanwhile, bags, writing instruments, technology products and drinkware account for around 8 percent each.

"Trends often change," points out Molde. "In previous years, with Ideas By Design, writing instruments have accounted for larger percentages, whereas now electronic devices, digital accessories, and computer products are growing in popularity."

"That's a trend," she concludes, "which looks set to continue."
