Taliesin Independent Living complex

Nua Healthcare has just opened a new independent living complex in Portlaoise for persons with Asperger Syndrome. This 7000 sq foot complex is situated on 6 acres of woodland a short distance from Portlaois town.

The unit incorporates a central medium support facility with a drop in social centre for additional residents. Nua Healthcare is in advanced stage negotiations with the County Council with a view to placing 6 to 12 log cabins on the land. Each log cabin will have a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and kitchen and will enable each individual to live independently whilst having access to 24 hour support from the central unit. Individuals will effectively have their own house and individualised support plan dependent on their needs.

The central medium support unit has just opened and can accomodate up to 5 adults. We hope to have the first log cabin in place by Christmas 09.

This is an exciting development for the organisation. It now means we can cater for individuals who need minimal levels of support who don't require a typical residential care setting. Existing residents with Asperger Syndrome also have a clear path from whatever support level they are in toward independent living.
Nua Healthcare's next step after this will be to develop independent community housing for individuals with Asperger Syndrome / HFA. This would be in the form of a house / apartment in the local community. Individuals would make the transition eventually from our log cabins out into the wider community and will retain satellite supports from Nua Healthcare. We will then have a clear transition path from High support right through to independence.

About Nua Healthcare

Nua Healthcare was formed in 2004 by a group of experienced social care professionals to fill a significant gap in services for people with Asperger Syndrome / High functioning Autism. Prior the organisations inception, many individuals were faced with being inappropriately placed in learning disability or psychiatric services. This was of great concern / stress to individuals and families affected by the condition.

Nua Healthcare staff and management have extensive experience working in the area of developmental disability, community services and crisis intervention. All staff are highly motivated, fully trained and committed to quality, social inclusion and service user empowerment. We have had great success in designing and implementing person centred programmes for a varied client group which has led to a significant increase in quality of life for these individuals and their families.
