T. S. Poetry Press Offers $1,000 College Scholarship
T. S. Poetry Press, publisher of How to Read a Poem, is offering a new $1,000 scholarship, usable to pursue any major. Apply with poems and two brief vignettes.
Ossining, New York, August 6, 2014 (Newswire.com) - T. S. Poetry Press, the award-winning publisher of How to Read a Poem: Based on the Billy Collins Poem 'Introduction to Poetry', is offering a new $1,000 scholarship, usable to pursue any major.
The Press has an emphasis on what it calls “poetry for life,” and this past spring gave every student in a graduating class of 180 students at Waccamaw High School in South Carolina a copy of How to Read a Poem. With the help of English teacher, Dr. Johanna Herndon, a mysterious and inspiring anonymous letter was folded into the books, and the books were presented at graduation practice as if they were the diplomas. Poetry for life was the implicit message.

Now, as a continuing part of its effort to celebrate "poetry for life," the Press will award a $1,000 scholarship to a student who shows great promise in poetry, regardless of that student's eventual major. High school students up through college sophomores may apply by November 30, 2014. U. S. citizens only.
Application process will include submission of four original poems and two brief vignettes about how the student came to be involved with poetry and the student's poetry writing process.
Entries will be judged by T. S. Poetry Press staff—for their originality, technical facility, emotional impact, and strength of voice. One scholarship will be awarded, but more than one entrant’s poems and vignettes may be featured on the How to Read a Poem website, with appropriate credit given.
Scholarship winner will be announced in the Spring of 2015.
