Sussex Businessman Robert Langmead Turns Cape Crusader for Charity

Online, March 8, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Chichester businessman Robert Langmead is flying half way around the world to take part in a gruelling 110 km cycle race to raise money for terminally ill local children.

Mr Langmead, 42, Managing Director of Sussex property business Kingsbridge Estates, is flying 6,000 miles to South Africa to compete in the 2011 Cape Argus Cycle Tour around the mountainous coastline near Cape Town, on Sunday 13 March.

This is his 12th Cape Argus Tour and this year he is raising £5,000 for Chichester-based children's charity The Sussex Snowdrop Trust which provides care at home, counselling and financial support for very sick local children and their families.

He explained: "I've been doing the Cape Argus tour since 1998, partly for fitness, partly for fun but most importantly to raise money for children's charities. This year I chose The Sussex Snowdrop Trust because of their superb work supporting children and their families through the very difficult times associated with life threatening or terminal illness.

"As a father of three young girls, the work of The Sussex Snowdrop Trust work is particularly meaningful to me. I have raised money for national children's charities in the past, but this year I wanted my fundraising to make a difference on a truly local level."

Robert's tough training regime sees him cycling up to 10 hours a week to ensure he is in the frontrunners among the Tour's 35,000 competitors. Just seven hours is allowed to complete the course, with the winners often recording times of under 3 hours. Robert's best time is 3 hours 55 minutes.

He continued: "The race involves a lot of bunch riding, with large groups of cyclists challenging each other for the lead. It can get pretty hectic at times and crashes are common.
"The course includes several impressive mountains and the weather can be a real challenge, with severe heat or very high winds to contend with."
