'SunWorldwide' - Business Worldwide - (China World's Biggest Exporter) ...
Online, April 6, 2010 (Newswire.com) - http://www.sunworldwide.com: China has surpassed Germany as the world's biggest exporter according to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
China exported $1.2 trillion of merchandise last year, compared with $1.12 trillion by Germany. The United States was third with $1.06 trillion.
China has been at the centre of an improvement in world trade growth, a fact that has cemented its role as the great hope for the global economy but there may be trouble looming say analysts at "SunWorldwide".
The warning comes as tensions mount between China and the US with the United States becoming more vocal in their assertions that China is deliberately manipulating its currency to give its exports an advantage over its competitors.
"SunWorldwide" believes that it is essential that the US not take unilateral action against China in terms of trade sanctions or tariffs because there is sufficient sympathy among other exporting nations to warrant a coordinated effort to persuade China to allow its currency, the yuan, to appreciate.
Though China is reluctant to do this, the damage that could befall its economy if exporters imposed trade tariffs on its goods could be far worse than any revaluation of the yuan.
"SunWorldwide" is said to be confident that any trade protectionist measures taken thus far will be reversed with multi-lateral negotiation.
