Sugarcane Jane Americana Duo Readies New Studio Album

Sugarcane Jane, the Alabama Gulf Coast-based duo, will release their fifth studio album, Ladders and Edges – an album they conceived with award-winning Canadian musician, songwriter and record producer Colin Linden. The album is being released via Anthony Crawford’s Admiral Bean Records on May 26.

Sugarcane Jane has amassed an extremely loyal following. Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford purvey what they proudly call “Organic Music at its Finest.” Rich, homegrown, and natural, their brand of Americana draws from a deep well of roots influences, interwoven with inflections of folk, country, and rock. Both virtuosos in their own right, Anthony is a songwriter who plays acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a bass drum (which he plays while strumming his six-string) and Savana Lee deftly dances between rhythm guitar, tambourine, and snare drum, but it’s their sibling-like harmony that sets them apart.

This album has been a long time coming. These are all our own songs and really give more insight as to who we are and what we believe in. Family is everything to us and we are trying to give our kids some guidance and advice in a song, without having to necessarily tell them everything,"

Anthony Crawford, Owner of Admiral Bean Records

Multi-instrumentalist Anthony Crawford is known in most circles as a sideman to the stars. Over the course of the last three decades, he has performed with Neil Young, Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, and Sonny James, and has written / co-written songs recorded by Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers, Billy Burnett, Lee Greenwood, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few. Yet, even with his history of working with heavyweights, Crawford feels Sugarcane Jane – his musical venture with multi-instrumentalist wife Savana Lee Crawford, is his life’s calling.

Recorded at Anthony Crawford's own Admiral Bean Studio in Loxley, Alabama, this cave man groove, thought-provoking album delves into present times with positive messages and insight.

“This album has been a long time coming. These are all our own songs and really give more insight as to who we are and what we believe in. Family is everything to us, and we are trying to give our kids some guidance and advice in a song, without having to necessarily tell them everything,” says Anthony. “These songs go deeper than some of our previous albums. We really just laid our hearts out on our sleeves.”

Sugarcane Jane opens loud and proud with “Strong,” a song with honest advice and inner thoughts from their own journey. “Slow It Down” is one of the more sweet and simple songs on the album that maintain that Southern groove and classic Sugarcane Jane sound.  “The Ladder” is a fan favorite steaming with Colin Linden’s blues guitar bad-boy kind of energy. On the politically inspired “The Whistle Song,” Sugarcane Jane observes the political slurs on social media while acknowledging that there will always be people on both sides of the fence. “The Edge” is a song with a face-lift from the archives of Anthony Crawford’s self-titled solo album and is still poignant today. The album closes with the inspiring family story of  “13th Believer,” which is all about the giving of yourself for the ones you love.

If you haven’t gotten to know Sugarcane Jane yet, Ladders and Edges is an honest glimpse of the present-day couple and a great place to start!
