Study Shows that Motion Sensor Security Lighting is More Successful in Deterring Criminals than Other Lighting
Online, April 22, 2010 (Newswire.com) - A study by the School of Criminal Justice, New Jersey, has concluded outdoor lighting is only effective in preventing crime if it enables people to notice criminal activity is taking place.
Security outdoor lighting, such as all-night floodlights, can fail to prevent break-ins as all too often they are installed on areas of buildings that can't be observed by passers-by. The security lighting can in fact help criminals to see what they are doing!
A burglar whose movement triggers a security light controlled by an infrared motion sensor, also known as a PIR sensor, is much more likely to be spotted.
Stuart Richardson, Director of Arthur English Lighting Ltd, said, "Lots of people are now installing outdoor lighting so that they can enjoy their garden at night, however, I always advise customers to make sure they install motion sensor lights at the same time."
"Well-placed outdoor lighting can provide security and safety for your home and potential intruders may be put off by movement-activated lights if they enter your garden," he added.
Mr Richardson also said, "Security lights should be fitted out of easy reach. It's recommended that you install lights over 2 metres up and ideally under the eaves of your property."
