Strathclyde SKIL Business School: Entrepreneurship Despite The Odds
Online, March 4, 2012 (Newswire.com) - SSBS believes in assignment based education where a student learns the diversity and dynamics of both working alone and in groups.[/url] The curriculum is devised in such a way that students recognize their career calling - entrepreneurship or a job. Adding detailed clarity to this, Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Dean, Strathclyde SKIL Business School says, "In SSBS, the curriculum structure is devised in such a way that during course evaluation, 50% weightage is given to exams, and the remaining 50% is for individual and group assignments."
These assignments have been formulated after a great deal of brainstorming, thought exchange and planning. They are divided into individual and group assignments to help develop the student's thought process. They begin to think critically, analyse the issue very seriously, get clarity, and then discover with an innovative solution.
"With that depth of purpose, every course at SSBS has a 50% evaluation component focussing on critical thinking, innovative solution and developing analytical skills," Dr. Metri elaborates. In their experience, SSBS has seen that when a student develops these skills there is a sense of clarity. Decision making becomes a science based on instinct. Self confidence is an added advantage. Armed with confidence, the required entrepreneurship skills, many students take the calculated plunge into turning entrepreneur and the knowledge that it is not going to be a 'smoothly planned' business ride.
In addition to the training during their stint at SSBS, students can embark on a programme at The Hunter Centre of Entrepreneurship Excellence at Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow, UK for one term. The months spent there can be metamorphosing for the students- Priceless, even. "Students are offered courses exclusively on Entrepreneurship. The school builds on a student's ability to think differently, take higher risks and avail of the networking opportunity with the international community of students in the UK," Dr. Metri points out.
On home turf, at SSBS, the Business Thought Leadership (BTL) series are an interesting first step for a budding entrepreneur. BTL brings existing entrepreneurs from around the Delhi area to the campus and they talk to the students about their experiences. How they started, what were the mistakes they made, what they did right and wrong. Some of the experiences are quite interesting and relevant. Entrepreneurs openly talk about where they stumbled and fell and how they rose from the dust. "Even though BTL is a lecture series, it acts as a catalyst, giving the students information
and inculcates in their mind a sense of what is really involved in becoming an entrepreneur. It has the necessary impact on their creative minds," says Dr. Metri speaking from experience. "When you turn entrepreneur, you must know life is not all roses and honey. Instead, it's hard work, time, money and being street smart - Not necessarily in that order."
