Stop Technology Overload With These Tips

Smart phones can make people's lives easier - and overwhelming and stressful. Holistic health advisor Marisela Martinez offers several smart ways to unplug in order to regain control.

While technology can make things easier, there's also a downside. It's easy for people to get absorbed in their phones at the expense of their lives offline. As a result people end up feeling scatterbrained, depressed and tired.

"I've seen too many people experiencing stress in their lives as their phones take over," notes Marisela Martinez, a holistic health advisor at Sun Chlorella USA. "We've come to believe we can manage impossible schedules and tasks with all those smart phones apps. Even worse, we end up diving into our phones and neglecting real world problems and responsibilities. As a result we feel depressed and overwhelmed."

However, there's an alternative, according to Martinez. To help people regain balance, she offers several tips for setting limits to smart phone use.

"Mealtimes are a great time to unplug," says Martinez. "When we share our meals with screens we lose out in two ways. We gain weight because we don't notice what we're eating. And we stop relating to family and friends. Ditch the phone at meals and you can build stronger relationships and healthier eating habits."

Smart phones have also taken over the way people think, diminishing creativity and problem-solving capability thanks to the quick-fix of Google. Instead of quickly looking up a question online, Martinez recommends wrestling with a problem first or even asking someone for help.

Finally, Martinez emphasizes keeping the bedroom smartphone-free. As she explains, increasingly children as well as adults report losing sleep due to interruptions from their smartphones. She recommends getting an old-fashioned alarm clock and leaving your phone in a drawer in the kitchen.

"It may be hard to wean yourself off your phone at first since we're used to the phone's presence throughout our waking hours," allows Martinez. "But like any habit, it can be broken. Enjoy the changes this brings to your life. Eventually, see if you can work up to a whole weekend - or even a vacation week - without touching your phone."
