State-of-the-Art Sports Complex to Boost Business and Quality of Life in Floresville
Online, July 27, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Members of the Floresville Economic Development Corporation (FEDC) voted unanimously to fund the city's proposed sports complex on Monday, July 23. The Floresville City Council ratified the FEDC vote by a 3-1 margin during last night's city council meeting.
The family-oriented complex will feature premiere facilities for adults, youth and children. Initial plans include renovations to existing city fields, bringing them up to tournament quality, as well as upgrades to concession and restroom facilities. Overall, plans for the complex feature three softball fields, four baseball fields, a football and soccer field, a walking track and a water splash pad. Future plans include additional recreational water activities and upgrades to the rodeo and festival grounds.
The modern complex will expand on the area that is currently allocated to the city's existing park, and will cover 150 acres of city-owned property located on 97 West. Construction of the complex is estimated to be completed by spring 2013, when Floresville will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original park. By expanding and improving the city's sports facilities, the city is taking the initiative to promote a health and wellness environment for its citizens.
"I am pleased that the FEDC and City Council have expressed their support for a happy and healthy city by approving a project that will continue to provide real value to our community in terms of quality of life," said Mayor Daniel Tejada. "The new complex will be a perfect complement to the city park foundation's 'Get Fit Floresville' program," he added, citing an initiative he implemented to promote good health in Floresville.
In addition to the many health benefits the sports complex will provide to citizens, FEDC President Sara Mendoza also sees this as a great economic opportunity for the city. "Las Cabras National Park, the San Antonio River, the Floresville Event Center, and now the Sports Complex, make the area a great destination for sports, entertainment and Texas history," said Mendoza.
An existing half-cent tax of the FEDC will fund the $2.1 million project in full. "Floresville's citizens will not see a difference in property or other taxes as a result of this project's construction," said City Manager Andy Joslin, adding that the half-cent tax has been in place since 1996.
