State-Level Research Linking Higher Education to Labor Market Demands Launched by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce
Online, January 19, 2016 (Newswire.com) - As part of its multi-state effort to help develop information systems that integrate education and workforce data to improve policies and programs, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (Georgetown Center) has officially launched a web portal to house its research for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The portal features state-level research on job projections, the economic value of college majors, and sector studies on healthcare, nursing, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
During the past decade, demand for better information about the outcomes of postsecondary education and training programs has been fueled by policymakers evaluating workforce outcomes and consumers seeking better information on postsecondary returns. Technology advances have produced new data sources, such as Internet job postings, and made it possible to better measure the labor market value of education and training programs.
As college gets more expensive, people want to know whether the investment is worth it.
In addition, the federal government has invested more than $700 million on state information systems to connect higher education programs to careers. More than half of states are conducting efforts on goal setting, while about 30 states have adopted performance-based funding mechanisms, some of which have workforce outcomes.

The Georgetown Center released a report today on Pennsylvania's 14-university State System on the economic value of college degrees in the state. Additional state specific work includes projecting Iowa's workforce trends, helping Virginia meet its workforce credentials goal, supporting the New Hampshire Coalition for Business and Education's efforts to meet a statewide workforce enhancement goal, and ongoing work with multiple states on the value of sub-baccalaureate, baccalaureate, and graduate credentials, competency-based education, and non-credit workforce programs.
The State Initiative helps states and higher education systems set educational attainment goals, increase transparency about labor market outcomes, and improve the alignment between education and the economy. The portal includes an interactive map of the 50 states, individual state pages with tailored information, state-related reports, and more features highlighting ongoing state projects.
