Standard Hydrogen Corporation Partners With National Grid to Build First ETS™

Commercial pilot of first-of-its-kind hydrogen facility will showcase environmental benefits

SHC ETS Station Concept

Standard Hydrogen Corporation (SHC) and National Grid have established a partnership for development and deployment of hydrogen infrastructure. Together, they will introduce the first SHC Energy Transfer System™ (ETS), which is planned for the capital region of New York, pending regulatory approval. The project will be the world's first demonstration of SHC's innovative, multi-use, hydrogen-based energy storage facility. The ETS will execute the SHC multi-revenue model, overcoming high capital costs of hydrogen infrastructure to accelerate its deployment. This first ETS installation will exhibit onsite renewable hydrogen production, long-duration electrical energy storage, and DC fast-charging capabilities for electric vehicles, among other functions. It will set the stage and attract investment for future expansion of stations. As proposed, the station will be designed, built and operated by SHC with services delivered to National Grid and its customers.

SHC co-founder and CEO Paul F. Mutolo, Ph.D., said, "We are delighted to announce this exciting partnership, and the first infrastructure project within it. National Grid understands the advantages of hydrogen to reach many of their future energy goals. I'm excited about the transportation opportunities, as my wife and I hope our kids will learn to drive on zero-emission vehicles. This project will provide them cleaner air, even before they get behind the wheel."

"Green, renewable hydrogen is a key piece of the puzzle to reach net-zero by 2050," said Badar Khan, President of National Grid, US. "The new hydrogen-based system is going to reduce emissions in New York across power, transportation and heating, the three most difficult sectors to decarbonize. Innovative systems like this one are going to move the needle for a cleaner tomorrow."

William Acker, Executive Director of the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology consortium (NY-BEST), remarked, "This is an impressive step forward for New York State, and for New York's grid. When innovators work together with utilities, it provides a way to bring those benefits to New York more quickly, and with greater benefits for ratepayers. We look forward to this project coming to fruition and demonstrating important capabilities needed to achieve New York's clean energy and climate goals."

The commercial pilot of the ETS comes at a critical time for New York State, as it looks for available technology solutions to help meet the goals under the recently enacted Community Leadership and Climate Protection Act. Non-combustion use of renewable hydrogen has proven utility in reducing emissions and enabling high penetration of renewables. The ETS has the capability to eliminate 6,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 740,000 gallons of gasoline demand annually. It is designed to generate positive economic return from that unique utility of hydrogen.
