Spiritual Haze Presents "Outsiders of Americana"

On Friday, January 22nd, Spiritual Haze presents "Outsiders of Americana", a showcase of alternative roots music, featuring Darren Deicide, and Sam Sjostedt and the Runaway Boys.

“Outsiders of Americana” showcases two alternative Americana music acts in the unique environment of Spiritual Haze, a hookah lounge enterprise founded by the owners of Electric Haze. Sam Sjostedt and the Runaway Boys are a five-piece alternative-folk band based in Worcester. Darren Deicide, from New Jersey, will be debuting his own style of neo-jukehouse blues to Worcester.

Doors open at 9pm and performances will begin by 10pm. Spiritual Haze is located at 589 Park Ave in Worcester, MA.

About Darren Deicide:

"If any proof is needed that the power of blues is easier to find than ever, look no further than Darren Deicide," said The Aquarian Weekly. "Surprisingly rugged and rich...Darren Deicide brings more danger to rock n' roll with a single blues lick and a few moments of your time than most contemporary bands do over the course of a tour," said Jersey Beat. Darren Deicide is the pioneer of his own style of neo-jukehouse blues that acknowledges diabolical traditions while treading its own path through the contemporary world.

Darren Deicide was born on Halloween in the rhythm and blues filled environment of Chicago. Colorful reviews describe his playing style as "blending the best aspects of blues, rock n' roll, and punk." One said this "John Lee Hooker meets Johnny Rotten" has "a fondness for the blues and the attitude of a punk" creating "raw, bluesy punk by a one-man dervish." Darren Deicide's music "sounds like something Joe Strummer might have written had he been raised in the Mississippi Delta." And yet another describes this sound as "the energy of Hasil Adkins, the presence of Robert Johnson, but the tortured delivery of Daniel Johnston." His trademark vocals may "make Satan himself feel as if he is not sinister enough". "His singing has a plaintive cry; a mix of blues with a streak of something ominous, some sort of vague, yet tantalizing danger with a no-holds-barred, sonic intensity," states another review. Like his own multi-cultural background, his music is an eclectic hybrid of many blues-based styles, but remains, as described in another review, as "good, pissed snot-infested rock n roll". "[Darren] Deicide really is in a class all by himself; I can't think of any modern act to whom I could compare him," said Independent Review.

He maintains a continuous touring schedule and has played with an array of notable artists around the entire United States that has spanned from The Members and Dead Prez to Danny and the Juniors. He has played on Fox 5's "Good Day New York" as a featured artist on the "Make Music New York Festival". In addition he has been featured at Louisville, KY's "Good Folk Fest", Washington, NJ's "Festival in the Borough", and Hartford, CT's "Hope Out Loud Festival". He has worked with award-winning director, Gabriel Haze, and reborn doll artist/model, Marilyn Mansfield, on his premiere music video for the song "The Cocaine Song". Recently, he made his debut at the legendary New York City venue, Webster Hall. As a devotee of rhythm, blues, and punk, Darren also competes and teaches swing dancing and has had editorial articles printed in a number of publications, including the long running column "Agent Provocateur" in The Aquarian Weekly, which became a weekly segment for the 9Sense podcast. Recently Darren was allowed access to the Historic Jersey City's Harsimus Cemetery and recorded "Back from the Dead: The Harsimus Sessions", a new set of live video sessions. In 2016, his first full-length record in 7 years, The Blues Non Est Mortuum, will be released on Berenice Records.
