Specialty Spanish Food Purveyor, Natalia Cabrera, Talks About Olive Oil, Passion for High Quality Food and Owning Her Own Food Business

Natalia Cabrera speaks about being a woman owned business, passion for olive oil and the brand she built.

The company, Khayyan (which is the Arabic name for the city of Jaen, Spain meaning crossroads of trade), founded by Natalia Cabrera was born in 2013 out of pure passion for high quality basic foods driven by her deep knowledge of and experience with the large variety of extra virgin olive oils of Spain. A native of Spain, Natalia, working in international finance in New York recognized over years of business travel and family visits to her home country that there was a lack of genuine and authentic high quality olive oil supplied to restaurants in New York. Being a foodie her mission was simple; bring the best extra virgin olive juice from Spain.

With the NYIOOC gold award winning brand Olivar Santamaria, Natalia brings pure extra virgin olive oil from Spain without blending with oils from other countries. Maintaining the integrity of the olive oil is essential, Khayyan does not mix the olive oil with low cost oils to increase profit margins. As a purveyor of fine quality olive oils her company seeks out the best single varietal Picual extra virgin olive oil and imports her products directly to U.S. chefs and gourmet stores. Natalia does grassroots market research by asking chefs and restaurant owners about the olive oil they use and how Olivar Santamaria can make improvements in their kitchens.  

Does a woman owned business supplying predominantly men owned and run kitchens sounds tough? Natalia has a simple philosophy: “Starting a food business has great many challenges, you wonder if it’s the right kitchen or the right tastes that your food products may satisfy? The struggles are daily in the gritty restaurant world but you realize that the only obstacle is not going for it and recognizing that everyone should consume high quality food products.”

Living a long healthy life consuming ingredients satisfying the senses by bringing the essence of the Mediterranean diet is what founder Natalia has a passion for and with Khayyan and Olivar Santamaria she brings that passion to her extra virgin olive oil consumers.
