Spay Day USA Comes To Churchtown Veterinary Associates
Online, February 10, 2011 (Newswire.com) - PENNSVILLE -- Spay Day (TM) USA, an international event, will be celebrated at Churchtown Veterinary Associates, 296 N. Broadway in Pennsville, on Tuesday, February 22. This annual event is sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States.
Held on the last Tuesday of February, Veterinarians and their staff, animal welfare professionals, business owners and citizens come together to provide low cost spay/neuter services and to promote spay neuter as an effective and humane method of decreasing the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters. Originally created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995, this initiative, and DDAL, was merged into The Humane Society of the United States in 2006.
"While we have always worked with local shelters and rescues to provide low-cost spay/neuter, we decided that recognizing this international effort and opening it to the public would spread the message even further," said Dr. Judy Morgan. "Tragically, The Humane Society estimates that more than four million pets are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a loving families companionship."
About every eight seconds, a cat or dog is euthanized in a U.S. animal shelter, according to The HSUS. While some may be euthanized due to illness or injury, most are victims of human failure to provide them with the care they deserve. Despite the best efforts of shelters nationwide, there are still too many pets and not enough loving, responsible homes. Since its inception in 1995, participants in Spay DayTM have spayed or neutered approximately two million animals.
"When you consider that the cost of pet overpopulation is an unbelievable $1 billion per year cost to provide community animal control services and care for homeless animals, this effort can also save taxpayer dollars," Morgan said. "We plan to make this an annual event, perhaps enlarge it next year, and hope that it spreads to other practitioners in our area and beyond."
Churchtown's participation appeared on its website and facebook page at the beginning of February and response has been overwhelming. Though all available slots are currently filled, a waiting list has been created; additional information can be obtained by calling 856-678-3883.
