The demand for smarter homes is increasing. Smart Homz, a home technology company based in NJ, is helping builders and developers plan for today's technology demands during the construction process. As Smart Homz owner, Dave LaMere explains, "Once the sheetrock has gone up, it makes it much more labor intensive to try and create a wired infrastructure that's critical for today's demands." Smart Homz is currently prewiring five new homes for Glasser Development; each of these homes on New Jersey's coastal town of Long Beach Island has a wired infrastructure for surveillance, security and WiFi demands. Two of these ocean front homes are being built by JDM Andrews, a custom home builder located in Surf City NJ. President of JDM, Mary Finelli, sees the importance of including a pre-wire package in every home they build. "We leave it up to the customer to decide how much they want to add as far as audio video and surveillance/security is concerned," Finelli explained, "but wiring for a strong WiFi network and smart TVs is part of our basic package these days."

"Every customer is different," explains LaMere, "and we use a very consultative process to make sure the home is prewired for the client's needs." At a basic level todays homes are wired for an access point on each floor for a strong WiFi network. If the cable provider installs your router on the ground floor, and it's a three floor home, the coverage on the third floor would be spotty at best. Running a few Cat6 cables during the build would solve that issue. The construction phase is the right time to wire for security, surveillance, speakers and an automation platform like Control4. There is no substitute for a hardwired system and running those cables while the walls are open is easier and more cost effective.

Glasser Development purchased an acre lot where they are in the process of building three new custom homes. One of the homes being built by Tradewinds Builders is already under contract and is being fully customized by Smart Homz and the client. A second home on the same lot 1035A Long Beach Blvd is currently listed just shy of $3.2M and can be viewed by contacting Nathan Colmer of Van Dyk Group. The ocean front property, being built by JDM Andrews, has not yet been listed.
