Sikh Community of Jersey City Shares Hot Meal with 5000 People Across Shelters in Tri-state

Like last four years, Sikh Community in Jersey City visited shelters with hot food to celebrate Guru Nanak's birth anniversary.

To celebrate the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak, the  Sikh community of Jersey City shared hot meal with 5000 people across various shelters in the Tri-State on 15th November. The event was named, ‘Let’s Share a Meal’. This was the fourth year in a row that the community chose to celebrate by bringing hot food to shelters. Jersey City officials, including Mayor Fulop, participated in the event by helping to carry out the activities to encourage the volunteers.

The food was prepared in the Jersey City Sikh temple, located in the 1080 West Side Avenue. Community kitchen (Langar) is integral part of all Sikh temples. Volunteers cook, wash utensils and serve food to all visitors who sit together and partake it. It serves the notion of equality, encourages volunteer service (Seva) and equality of all people before one God. ‘Let’s Share a Meal’ event aims to share the same message and hot meal with people across shelters.

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, the first Sikh spiritual teacher, was born in the year 1469 in the Punjab region of Indian Subcontinent. Guru Nanak traveled throughout the region and world promoting equality, diversity, compassion, honesty and tolerance, which became the core principles of Sikhism.
