Setting New Goals on the Road to a Drug-Free South Africa

Volunteers from across South Africa are sprinting to break all records on drug prevention. Setting a goal to delivering 100 drug education lectures before International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, they are reaching thousands of youth with the truth about drugs.

Drug-Free World Africa is well on its way to doubling the goal they set of conducting 100 drug prevention lectures between May 1 to June 26, International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. In the first 18 days of this initiative, Drug-Free World chapters carried out 53 events in Cape Town, Mpumalanga, Port Elizabeth, Tshwane, Soshanguve, Free-State and Johannesburg.

The volunteers are driven by the purpose of ending the drug abuse epidemic in their country by educating young and old on the harmful effects of drugs.

Maurithus Meiring, Drug-Free Africa Coordinator and Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology Pretoria, estimates that before June 26, volunteers will educate 100,000 youth and adults on the truth about drugs. They also expect to reach more than a million people through their social media campaign.

While the target of 100 lectures seemed very challenging when they set it last month, they are considering doubling it, now that they have organized a June 6-16 Drug-Free World program launch in the community of QwaQwa in Orange Free-State. Planning is underway there to march against drugs with community leaders and some 10,000 school children followed by Drug-Free World drug education lectures in 200 area schools.
