ARLINGTON, MA: Schools for Children, Inc. will host a public screening of the critically acclaimed new film, Race to Nowhere, about the dark side of America's achievement culture and its impact on education. The screening will take place on October 4th, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington, and is part of a nationwide screening event on National Child Health Day. Following the film, education experts and authors Alfie Kohn and Richard Weissbourd will discuss the film and take questions from the audience. Tickets are $10 and available in advance online through the Schools for Children website.

"At Schools for Children, we're engaged in incubating schools and educational services that respect and support children as unique individuals," said Schools for Children's Executive Director, Dr. Theodore Wilson. "We chose to bring this film to the Boston area because we know that many families are concerned about the pressures of achievement-especially in high school. We're hoping the film sparks some good conversation and new ideas for
improving and enriching education in a healthy way for all children."

Alfie Kohn will facilitate a post-film discussion with Richard Weissbourd. Alfie Kohn speaks widely on human behavior, education, and parenting and is the author of eleven
books and scores of articles. He has been described in Time magazine as "perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of education's fixation on grades [and] test scores." Richard
Weissbourd is a child and family psychologist and a member of the faculty of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and School of Education. He is the author of The Parents We
Mean To Be, How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children's Moral and Emotional Development and The Vulnerable Child, What Really Hurts America's Children and What We Can Do About It, recently named by the American School Board Journal as one of the top ten education books of all time.

A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform has invaded America's schools and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy students. This remarkable documentary shines a light on the price our kids pay for this "race to nowhere" and features the heartbreaking stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink and educators who are burned
out and worried that students aren't developing the skills needed for the global economy. Race to Nowhere also includes interviews with Dr. Madeline Levine, author of the bestseller, The Price of Privilege, Dr. Deborah Stipek, Dean of the Stanford School of
Education, Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, an adolescent medicine specialist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Wendy Mogel, author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, Denise
Pope, author of Doing School, and Sara Bennett, author of The Case Against Homework.
