SAS Hiring for the Holidays

The director of operations at SAS discussed the current hiring initiative, and shared effective strategies for making it work.

"The holiday season is right around the corner, and it’s our busiest time of year,” said Jonathan, SAS's director of operations. “On top of an already increasing demand for our services, my colleagues and I want to make sure we have what it takes to ensure that the last few months of 2015 are successful. That’s why we’re expanding our team.”

“When it comes to onboarding, cultural fit matters most,” Jonathan continued. “We have an intensive, coach-guided training system through which team members learn all they need to know to excel here at SAS. Values such as empathy, integrity, and a collaborative mind-set are not so easy to teach. I want to ensure candidates are committed to principles and have goals that align with ours. Individuals who have the passion and drive to grow with us can apply using our website.”

"By revealing as much information as possible up front, my colleagues and I avoid wasting applicants' time and energy as well as our own,"

SAS Director of Operations Shares Holiday Hiring Tips

Although the fall season began just weeks ago, Jonathan asserted that it’s not too early to hire for the holidays. “It’s best to be prepared, and I want to take my time hiring and training the right candidates,” he continued. “The last thing anyone needs is to be rushed, and onboarding is a process that requires a solid month.”

Jonathan has some helpful strategies he uses to streamline the process, however. For instance, he begins by targeting the right people instead of posting general hiring messages. This is accomplished through the development and distribution of detailed job descriptions. They outline the objectives of a given position, as well as required qualifications and other expectations. Job descriptions are succinct, and they even include relevant salary ranges.

“By revealing as much information as possible up front, my colleagues and I avoid wasting applicants’ time and energy as well as our own,” Jonathan indicated. “We don’t want to needlessly peruse résumés or interview professionals who aren’t really interested in what we do here at SAS – and they likely don’t want to apply for jobs about which they know little. They shouldn’t have to come in for interviews before knowing anything about the positions at hand. It’s simply best to put everything out there right from the start.”

“These are some of the best strategies I know for efficient hiring,” Jonathan concluded. “They can be applied whenever, but they are especially valuable when time is of the essence. The holiday season will be here before we know it!”
