Samsung Is King of the Hill in the Global AMOLED Display Market: TechNavio Research
Online, April 11, 2014 (Newswire.com) - TechNavio, an independent tech-focused global research firm, reports that consumer demand for bigger, brighter smartphone displays is growing the Global AMOLED Display Market at a CAGR of 21.8 percent from 2014-2018, with Samsung holding the biggest piece of the market share pie.
Samsung, whose Galaxy 3 series was the first smartphone with an AMOLED (which stands for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display, is by far the leading vendor in the market with more than 90 percent market share. The only company that even comes close to competing with Samsung is LG, which is currently developing AMOLED displays for ultra-high quality, low power consumption plasma TVs.
OLED displays are developed using thin, organic film display technology. The matrix of OLED pixels emits light as soon as an electric current is applied. AMOLED takes this a step further, adding a layer of semiconducting film, which increases how quickly each pixel is activated. Since the light from the screen comes from each pixel individually, AMOLED displays have greater contrast, color gamut, and ultra-high clarity pictures.
AMOLED displays were first used in Samsung smartphones in 2010. Subsequently, AMOLED displays have been used in all models of the Samsung Galaxy series. Due to the incorporation of this technology, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been tipped as one of the best ever smartphone displays.
Unsurprisingly, as adoption of smartphones increases, the Global AMOLED Display Market will also see growth.
"As a result of the rapid increase in smartphone sales over the past few years, smartphone manufacturers are expected to be the major revenue contributors to the Global AMOLED Display market. The unit shipments of smartphones were 714.4 million units in 2012 and are expected to increase to 1,707.4 million units by 2018," says Faisal Ghaus, Vice President of TechNavio Research.
To determine the scenario for these vendors in the next 3-4 years, TechNavio analysts have conducted in-depth analysis of the impact of market drivers, challenges and trends featuring data on product segmentations, vendor shares, growth rate by revenue and an evaluation of the different buying criteria in the order of importance.
