Rosedale Cardiologist Says Non-invasive EECP® Therapy Allows Heart Patients to Get Out of the House and Be Active without Chest Pain, Shortness of Breath, or Fatigue

Dr. Ola Akinboboye of Laurelton Heart Specialists says studies suggest EECP® treatments may also improve sexual function in coronary artery disease patients with erectile dysfunction

Dr. Ola Akinboboye, Medical Director of Laurelton Heart Specialists in Rosedale, New York, has announced his clinic is offering a non-invasive treatment for increasing blood flow to the heart called Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP®) therapy. The painless procedure, delivered in a series of one-hour daily sessions on an out-patient basis, has been cleared by the FDA as an effective treatment for symptoms associated with angina and heart failure.

"We have many patients who are benefiting from the therapy," said Dr. Akinboboye. "I have one patient in her mid-seventies who was immobilized by chest pain which she experienced after any minimal exertion. Now, after EECP® treatments, she is able to freely move about and go out on errands without pain."

Dr. Akinboboye explained that during EECP® therapy the patient reclines on a soft, padded table while cuffs similar to blood pressure cuffs are wrapped around the legs and buttocks.

"The cuffs are inflated in synchronization to the patient's own heartbeat, squeezing blood from the legs up into the heart, providing the heart tissues with extra oxygen and nutrients," said Dr. Akinboboye.

Dr. Akinboboye further stated that EECP® therapy is often used on patients with advanced coronary artery disease who have previously undergone bypass surgery and other invasive procedures.

"Many patients who have undergone open heart surgery and angioplasty feel exhausted," said Dr. Akinboboye. "After being treated with EECP®, they feel more energetic and are able to get out of the house and be active without chest pain or fatigue."

Dr. Akinboboye said EECP® therapy dilates the patient's arteries and activates a network of smaller "collateral arteries", increasing blood flow throughout the entire body.

"Not only has the therapy's ability to increase blood flow been shown as an effective treatment for angina and heart failure, but there is now preliminary scientific evidence that EECP® might improve sexual function in patients with coronary artery disease and erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Akinboboye.

Dr. Akinboboye said EECP® treatments are covered through Medicare and most major insurance providers.
