Rodney Lough Jr. Wins Big in PPA Summer Shootout
Online, February 15, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Master Photographer Rodney Lough Jr. won the top prize against all competition in the Open category in the Professional Photographers of America's (PPA) Summer Shootout Photography Competition with his image "Vortex." Not only did Rodney win the Open category, he came close to sweeping it, also placing third with his photograph "The Territory Beyond." It's a great start to what is sure to be a new year full of prestigious awards.
Vortex is a stunning image of swirling waters and astounding reflections. This photograph comes from the Somoto Canyon in Nicaragua. To capture it, Rodney had to jump off a 40 foot cliff into the waters of the canyon below, pick off bloodthirsty leeches and hike all day in the difficult jungle terrain. But when he saw this unique natural curl in the water, a condition that would never have existed had the water levels been even a little different or if he had been there a week earlier or a week later, he knew it was worth it. The judges at PPA clearly agree.
The Territory Beyond is a stark, remarkable scene and was taken in Yellowstone National Park, in Wyoming. It was photographed during one of the most amazing sunsets Rodney had ever experienced, one that just wouldn't stop coming and made him almost run out of film. This landscape seems to come from a place beyond our normal realm.
PPA's Summer Shootout is an online photo contest entered by the best photographers on the planet. Images are entered into four categories: Portrait, Weddings/Events, Commercial/Advertising and Open.
