Rockpointe and American Lung Association Offer Much-Needed COPD Education
"Gold Highlights 2018: A New Approach to COPD Management" Sessions address latest approaches to treatment of COPD, the nation's fourth-leading cause of death
LONG BEACH, Calif., October 1, 2018 (Newswire.com) - The American Lung Association, in partnership with Rockpointe Corporation and the Potomac Center for Medical Education (PCME), will hold three educational sessions for health professionals on the latest statistics, treatment options, and research findings on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Atlanta, Georgia (Sept. 27, 2018); Long Beach, California (Oct. 18, 2018); and Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas (Nov. 15, 2018). These CME-certified sessions, “Gold 2018 Highlights: A New Approach to COPD Management,” will be held in areas recently named as being among those with the highest COPD prevalence by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), primarily due to smoking rates and poor air quality.
All sessions are based on the recently published 2018 GOLD Report, which provides comprehensive recommendations for the diagnosis, assessment, and management of COPD. Important factors affecting clinician uptake of the recommendations include a lack of familiarity with or delayed adoption of GOLD 2018 therapeutic strategy, undertreatment or mistreatment based on disease severity, lack of individualization of management plans, and a lack of patient self-management support.
“GOLD 2018 Highlights: A New Approach to COPD Management” will review the new recommendations and enable clinicians to apply assessment and management strategies that incorporate the latest evidence to guide development of individualized management plans for patients with COPD. The activity is intended for pulmonologists, advanced practice nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals who treat COPD in the community setting.
PCME designates the activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. At its conclusion, participants should be able to demonstrate the ability to:
· Discuss the new recommendations of the GOLD 2018 therapeutic strategy and its impacts on the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of COPD.
· Apply GOLD 2018 assessment and management strategies, incorporating the latest clinical evidence to guide development of individualized management plans.
This activity is supported by an independent educational grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and was planned and will be implemented by the Potomac Center for Medical Education and Rockpointe in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). PCME is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
