Roadtrippers Predicts the Biggest Trends in Road Trips and Road Travel in 2019

The new trend report details how road travelers approach technology, accommodations, and more this year

Road Trip Trends 2019

This week, Roadtrippers, a Cincinnati, OH-based travel planning company, and digital magazine published its list of the biggest road trip trends for 2019. Based on data from its road trip planning app, conversations with users, and discussions among staff, the Roadtrippers team was able to see some clear patterns emerge.

According to the Roadtrippers trend report, the concept of luxury travel is being redefined. In 2019, we can expect to see a push for more unique accommodations, in addition to the continued rise of interesting Airbnb and glamping options.

“Glamping has been growing at a very fast rate in Europe and Australasia, and with the rise of groups like Autocamp and Under Canvas, we are finally about to see it hit the mainstream in the U.S.,” says James Fisher, Roadtrippers founder and CEO.

The authenticity hype of the past year is showing no signs of slowing down, and is instead influencing everything from how we use technology to how we share our trips on social media. In 2019, Roadtrippers predicts a rise in actively unplugging and staying in the moment while traveling, rather than live-streaming or sharing updates in real time.

This trend is closely related to the concept of boondocking—camping in the wild with no hookups for water or electricity—that has long been popular in the RV community. It is now gaining popularity among other travelers as well.

“Young people will continue to want to escape the city limits and explore, particularly nature, in ever-growing numbers,” says Fisher.

The desire for authenticity also influences how and where we travel, according to the report. Not every road trip has to be an epic cross-country quest. Instead, we’ll see a rise in shorter and more frequent trips, with a focus on independent and off-the-beaten-path locations, mom-and-pop restaurants, and less popular and overcrowded destinations.

Other trends include being conscious of nature and other travelers, trying different modes of transportation, and using technology in new, interesting ways.
