Businesses looking to either create or upgrade a technology commercialization department or entrepreneurs and professionals looking to break into a technology entrepreneurship and commercialization career now have the opportunity to participate and benefit from workshops jointly offered by the College of Engineering Technology at the Rochester Institute of Technology in association with Rochester’s first independent Advanced Technology Venture Creation Center – ATVentureCenter (ATVC) (https://www.atventurecenter.com) founded by RIT Research for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Professor Michael Crowley JD.

Professor Crowley, a researcher, educator and serial technology entrepreneur, founded ATVC in October 2017, with a vision to provide new corporate development and community outreach education programs, for advanced technology-based economic development theories. Such training programs could not only increase sponsored research and corporate development but also improve the ratio of tech licensing and commercialization. Nationally, only about 5% of all US patents get commercialized.

Professor Crowley believes that each advanced tech creation region in the US, like Western, NY, can become a “Mini-Silicon Valley” with the right training programs and if everyone in the region worked together to make this operational target a reality.

Immediately prior to founding ATVC, Professor Crowley spent the past 13 years doing sponsored research and delivering over 1,000 lectures nationwide on the topics of innovation, advanced technology entrepreneurship and commercialization. Professor Crowley is highly regarded in China as the result of his work training over 500 senior delegations to the United States during the past decade.

Crowley’s training program is called Techtrepreneurship™, which consists of 9 five-hour courses that make up the full workshop curriculum. The attendance at each course within the curriculum will allow students to receive individual course completion certificates.

The total cost of the full 9 course training program is $3,600 and each individual course costs $400.

Each course includes a complimentary continental breakfast and lunch, will begin at 8:30 AM and end at 4:00 PM. All courses will be presented at the Training Center at ATVC’s headquarters in downtown Rochester, NY at 2nd floor of The Legacy Tower (formerly called the Bausch & Lomb Tower), 1 Bausch & Lomb Pl, Rochester, NY 14604. “You can’t go a few days without hearing about the importance of bringing our local, regional and national economy back to the days when technology giants like Kodak, Xerox and Bausch & Lomb were producing major advanced technology breakthroughs and commercializing our regionally developed technology on a global scale. It is time to stop talking about the past and start taking positive and inventive steps to in the present to reshape our future,” said Erin Crowley, Co-founder and Managing Director of ATVC and a 2008 RIT mechanical engineering alumnus. “This program is a terrific opportunity for RIT-CET and ATVC to encourage more professionals, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and employees to become qualified in advanced technology licensing, commercialization and internal and external Techtreprenuership.”

The new RIT/ATVC Technical Entrepreneurship program will teach Demystifying Sponsored Research and Corporate Commercialization, Technology Selection/Risk Analysis, Building the “Fearless Team,” Capital Formation Strategies and Global Commercialization Licensing, Advanced Technology (AT) Lean Launch, AT Quality Certification and Marketing Strategies, AT Strategies for Economic Development and IP Licensing Fundamentals. All instruction will delivered be in-person by Professor Crowley and ATVC team members and advisors.

“The shortage of skilled and qualified advanced technology entrepreneurship and commercialization professionals is one of the biggest issues facing our world of manufacturing, corporate development and university licensing today,” said Ryan Ellis, Director of Supply Chain at The Gleason Corporation and a 2005 RIT Business Administration alumnus. “Professionals who gain the skills and tactics needed to seek out the best advanced technology commercialization opportunities and then license and bring breakthrough products and services to the marketplace against the growing tides of global technology competition... will be better prepared for their careers at global firms like Gleason and other organizations in the global manufacturing industry.”

Techtrepreneurship is a new category of continuing education programs that offer knowledge and a pathway to creating your own start-up or bringing your new skills to your current employer. The program is for learners looking for in-demand knowledge to advance their careers or potentially follow a new path leading to a fully accredited advanced credential.

“We are honored to work with RIT’s College of Engineering Technology to launch this new program in Technical Entrepreneurship and Commercialization of Advanced Technology. This is an area of expertise that has become increasingly more vital in the modern globalized marketplace,” said Professor Crowley, CEO and Co-Founder at ATVC. “This new offering marks a new and exciting step toward furthering our shared mission to expand access to high-quality, affordable technical entrepreneurship education. Our Techtrepreneurship programs provide the option and level of innovation and entrepreneurship learning that is designed to meet the needs of researchers, potential entrepreneurs, adult learners, universities and employers in today’s fast changing tech-driven world.”
