Renaissance Neighbor to Celebrate Many Talents During Litquake, San Francisco's Notorious Literary Festival

This week, author, particle physicist and public speaker Ransom Stephens Ph.D will read from his novel The God Patent, introduce some of the Bay Area's finest budding fiction writers, and host a panel on the effects of fiction on our minds.

Saturday, Oct 2nd, 3-4 pm | Variety Preview Room Theater | 582 Market St | Free

Ransom Stephens Ph.D will be reading a passage from his debut novel The God Patent as part of Dad Lit. The novel follows Ryan McNear, an engineer whose past mistakes cost him custody of his son, as he tries to win him back. In the course of his struggles Ryan befriends a surly adolescent math prodigy in dire need of parental guidance. The author is a long time mentor for Mentor Me Petaluma and is donating half of this month's royalties from The God Patent to their program.

Sunday, Oct 3rd, 7-9 pm | Makeout Room | 3225 22nd St | Free

Stephens returns as host to what The SF Chronicle calls "one of the best events at Litquake" and SF Weekly calls their "favorite:" Barely Published Authors, which features some of the Bay Area's best up-and-comers. Footage of last year's program.

Tuesday, Oct 5th, 6:30-7:30 pm | Mechanics Institute Library | 57 Post St | $12 public, free for members of the MIL

Stephens will host Virtual Reality: The Effect of Fiction on Your Mind. What do you really know about the characters you meet on the page? Are you sure it's healthy to visit imaginary worlds-even if they come from someone else's imagination? And how well do authors know the characters they invent? These questions and yours will be addressed by our panel: a neurologist-novelist and expert on how we know what we know, the most prolific reader in the Northern Hemisphere, a novelist famous for the intensity of her characters, an authority on the cognitive aspects of fiction, and a memoirist who has experienced mental illness and whose father was a great American writer.
