Relation Between Power Usage Efficiency And Profit

The metric is coined by The Green Grid to help the IT companies know how much they are spending in their data center facilities. The metric shows the additional power needed by a data center.

"A mistake most IT professionals do is they try lowering the PUE of their data centers with Google PUE in their minds but little do they know that a small firm couldn't complete with a giant firm. If you are really serious about lowering the PUE then you should look at the factors that are consuming the energy", the expert said.

To reduce Power Usage Efficiency, first thing you need to do is calculate the actual energy demand and then calculate the energy consumed by the data center. The calculation would give you a fair idea about the additional energy being consumed by the data center equipments like AC and cables.

Next thing is to calculate the energy demand of individual equipments in the data center. Finally you could remove the equipments that are consuming more than usual energy and bring new energy saver devices that would help reduce the PUE.

"Energy saving equals to profit. Reduced PUE would certainly help you cut down your power bill and in this way you could save money. PUE should be calculated on yearly basis as it is a huge project", said the expert.

The term Power Usage Efficiency is becoming popular in the IT circle. Companies are showing interest in lowering their PUE as they want to increase profit by reducing their power consumption.
