Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom Marks 150th Anniversary at Jewish Food & Cultural Festival

Wyomissing, PA, October 14, 2014 (Newswire.com) - The annual Jewish Food & Cultural Festival returns to Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom in Wyomissing Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

This year’s celebration is extra special as the congregation marks its 150th anniversary.

While the star of the show remains food favorites such as brisket, matzo ball soup and the ever popular Jewish apple cake, the attractions extend beyond the dining room.

This year’s event features the return of performers from Reading Theater Project after their triumphant appearance at the 2013 festival. The group will celebrate the RCOS anniversary with a look to the past. The performance will feature highlights from Yiddish theater, songs, and stories. The RCOS choir will perform with Reading Theater Project’s professional actors and musicians. The cast features Christine Cieplinski, Vicki Graff, Joel Gori and Christopher David Roché, with music by Chris Heslop.

Admission is free for the festival’s entertainment and education.

The event features a wide variety of delicious food for sale, most of which is prepared by members of the congregation.  Highlights include brisket and chicken platters, deli items, Israeli favorites and breakfast selections including fresh bagels and lox.  Our apple cakes sell out every year, and pastries such as ruggalah and mandel bread are big hits as well. There’s much more on the menu, too.

A ticket good for one dinner, deli, or Israeli platter costs $13. Advance tickets are available from Oheb Sholom members and the synagogue office. New this year is a “late-bird special.” Platters will be sold for $11 if purchased after 2 p.m. on the day of the festival.

Other highlights include sanctuary tours by Rabbi Brian Michelson,  educational displays and the sale of gift items by the Temple Sisterhood and Ofar Enterprises.

Oheb Sholom was founded in 1864 as an Orthodox congregation with just 20 members. This small but committed group helped Reading’s Jewish community flourish and grow.  The congregation has been part of the Reform movement since 1909 and has been located in Wyomissing since 1999. Today it has more than 200 families in its membership.

Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom is located at 555 Warwick Drive, a block away from State Hill Road near the Wyomissing Rite-Aid store.
