Online, April 20, 2014 (Newswire.com) - A delegation from PULSE of NY attended the gala presentation of the 2014 Castle Connolly Physician of the Year Awards on March 31 at the Pierre Hotel in New York. The awards honor outstanding achievements in medicine over the past year.
The awards, presented annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., recognize "physicians and leaders in health care whose dedication, talents and skills have improved the lives of countless thousands of people throughout the world."
This year's honorees were:
Lifetime Achievement:
• Victor Fazio, M.D.,
• Hagop M. Kantarjian, M.D.
Clinical Excellence:
• Susan B. Bressman, MD
• Catherine R. deVries, M.D.
• Michael S. Saag, M.D.
In addition, Castle Connolly presented National Health Leadership awards to Dr. Mehmet Oz and Lisa Oz, hosts respectively of TV's The Dr. Oz Show and The Lisa Oz Show, and co-founders of HealthCorps, an educational program based on the concept of the Peace Corps.
PULSE of NY President Ilene Corina said, "As patient safety advocates we are usually focused on the healthcare system's problems, so it's wonderful to attend an event recognizing the huge positive contributions that doctors and researchers make to the health of the nation."
In their acceptances, all the honorees stressed that their successes were the result of team, not just individual efforts.
Corina added, "The same thing applies to patient safety: it's a team effort, requiring cooperation from all those involved with a patient's care — doctors and nurses, hospital support staff, paramedics, the patient's family and friends, patient advocates, and as far as possible, the patient him- or herself. Only when all are communicating and collaborating will we improve the national record on patient safety."
