Professional Stone Restoration Company in Bakersfield

After purchasing a natural stone flooring system for your home or business, you want to be able to enjoy it, and also know that someone will be there to repair it professionally when it becomes scratched, chipped, stained or dull.

There are multiple factors to consider when your marble, slate, granite or travertine floors need a thorough polishing; so the last thing you want to do is hire someone who doesn't know what he's doing. Eric Garcia of California Surface Solutions Inc. says there is a very strict process that he and his crew stick to when it comes to resurfacing natural stone. Here are the steps that should be followed to ensure your stone is restored to the condition it was in the day it was installed:

1. Preparation is key. Your area should be covered with drop clothes to ensure protection of your personal belongings, furniture should be moved out of the way, electrical outlets need to be covered, and proper ventilation of the area should be ascertained.

2. Treat surface stains and repair damaged grout if necessary. Some resurfacers will attempt to grind down a stain; however, it needs to be treated first because it might be a deep penetrating stain that cannot simply be ground out. As for the grout, if it is highly damaged (i.e., broken or loose) it will need to be replaced completely.

3. Any type of moisture (e.g., wax, sealer, acrylic coating, etc.) needs to be removed completely via the use of strippers. Large floor machines with pads are utilized in wider areas; smaller hand-held machines are used in corners. Wet vacs are then used to remove the remaining moisture.

4. Now it's time for the actual stone resurfacing which is achieved through the use of course grinding pads. A wet vac should follow the grinder to pick up residue. Once properly ground down, the floor can be buffed with finer grinding pads.

5. The final polishing phase also utilizes the floor machine, but with the finest pad and polishing powder mixed with water to smooth out the surface entirely. Again, residue is picked up by the wet vac.

6. A pH neutralizer may be needed as a top coating dependent on the stone; if so, a floor conditioner is then applied on top of that. Dry time of the condition is reliant on the porosity of the stone. The surface should be thoroughly dried after conditioning.

7. Finally, a sealer can be applied to your freshly cleaned stone surface. Typically, 2-3 coats of sealer will be needed (depending on the stone), and there needs to be thorough dry time in between each coat.

Natural stone flooring should be professionally cleaned and resealed once a year. For more information regarding professional stone resurfacing and cleaning contact California Surface Solutions Inc. at 661-832-5144 or 661-978-0200
