PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY ALUMNI GIVE BACK IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

LOT 35 MEDIA GROUP and Prairie View A&M University take part in registering minority donors for Preserve Our Legacy's National Donor Awareness Week.

Houston, TX - Thousands will gather on the campus of PVAMU to celebrate Homecoming 2011. This year participants will not only lend financial support, enjoy good food, fellowship and festivities but they will have an opportunity to register as a bone marrow donor as well. LOT 35 MEDIA GROUP co-founders and PVAMU Alumni Sierra L. Susberry, MBA and Candace Johnson, MBA have stepped up to educate attendees during this years' annual homecoming celebration November 18, 2011.

Lack of Minority Donors
Presently the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program) reports 7 million registered with only 25% of the current U.S. national registry, consisting of Ethnic Minorities. In order to have a successful transplant, the marrow of donors and recipients must match closely, which in most cases is a family member or someone of their own race and ethnicity. Ethnic minorities have a 30-40% chance of finding a match from existing NMDP registry, while Caucasians have an 80% chance.

Preserve Our Legacy, Inc. a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit that spearheaded Jaden's Law to increase awareness about PBSC and bone marrow donation within various ethnic communities. Preserve Our Legacy launched the first educational program, P.O.L. Umbilical Cord Blood Program at Harlem Hospital in December 2010. The organization's mission is to educate individuals, especially those from various ethnic groups, about the benefits of stem cells through treatment options provided via PBSC, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donation. Since Jaden's death, Preserve Our Legacy has been advocating to increase awareness about the need of various ethnic donors, in addition to, having those that register to step up when called to help a patient. "We are excited that individuals within our community want to take part in helping Preserve Our Legacy with awareness and saving lives. These women are doing what we need more members in our community to do, inform people in hopes that they step up to register and help more patient's find a match" says, Shana Melius, Co-Founder of Preserve Our Legacy, Inc.
