The Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) is pleased to announce the admission of Ms. Darlene Marzari to Honourary Membership in the Institute for her distinguished achievements, and contributions to the planning profession. Honourary membership in PIBC recognizes distinguished individuals from outside the profession who have made outstanding contributions to the planning profession.
Vancouver, Canada, October 13, 2015 (Newswire.com) - The Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) is pleased to announce the admission of Ms. Darlene Marzari to Honourary Membership in the Institute for her distinguished career, achievements, and contributions to the planning profession. Honourary membership in PIBC recognizes distinguished individuals from outside the profession who have made outstanding contributions to the planning profession and to their communities.
A native of Toronto, Ms. Darlene Marzari came to British Columbia in the late 1960s to join the City of Vancouver’s Social Planning Department, one of the first in Canada. She was later elected to Vancouver City Council where she helped lead the public participation component of the first Livable Region Plan. The strong commitment she established for this regional planning approach still continues to this day in Metro Vancouver.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Ms. Darlene Marzari as our newest PIBC Honourary Member and acknowledge her contributions to regional planning and sustainability in British Columbia. We also look forward to welcoming our newest members and congratulating our longstanding professional members for their outstanding and innovative contributions to the planning profession at our annual World Town Planning Day Gala event.

From 1991–1996, while serving as an MLA and Minister in the Provincial Government, Ms. Marzari was instrumental in establishing new legislation that allowed regional districts to create their own regional growth strategies. As a result of her persistence and collaborative approach, the legislation gained broad support and improved regional planning across British Columbia. After leaving politics in 1996, she joined the board of the Fraser Basin Council and devoted her time to help build the non-profit Council into a key community-based, regionally organized advocate for sustainable solutions involving federal, provincial, local and First Nations governments, along with the private sector and civil society.

PIBC will officially recognize the admission of Ms. Marzari to Honourary Membership at its eighth annual World Town Planning Day - Celebrating the Profession gala reception and dinner at The Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, November 7th, 2015. At this celebratory event, PIBC will also recognize the most recent individuals who have become certified as Registered Professional Planners (RPPs) and those longstanding professional members with PIBC for 25 years or more. The gala, which coincides with internationally recognized World Town Planning Day, also provides an excellent annual opportunity for colleagues and friends of the planning profession from across BC, the Yukon, and beyond to network and socialize.
