Picasso, Rare Cask 42,6 and Sushi Converge in Luxe Toronto Restaurant

Shoushin's new in-house gallery delivers multi-sensory dining experience

Shoushin, an authentic, upscale sushi restaurant located in one of North Toronto’s most affluent neighbourhoods, unveiled a permanent collection of awe-inspiring art yesterday evening that is sure to delight patrons. The collection features two original Pablo Picasso ceramics, a selection of stunning photographs by owner and head Chef Jackie Lin, and a coveted bottle of limited-edition 100-year-old Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6.

Chef Jackie made a name for himself as an impeccable sushi chef at Toronto’s renowned Japanese restaurant, Zen. He considers sushi an art that “demands lifelong study and practice.” That said, his love of art extends beyond the plate, and the idea of an in-house gallery was conceived to trigger his creativity in the kitchen as well as enhance his establishment.

"The first taste from the LOUIS XIII Rare Cask 42,6 is definitely worth celebrating and commemorating. We are thrilled to have Chef Jackie and Shoushin be able to showcase the Rare Cask 42,6 along with his whimsical culinary art,"

Thomas Beraud-Sudreau, Country Manager of Rémy Martin

A feast for the eyes

The two Picasso ceramics, Nature morte à la cuillère and the aptly themed Poisson chiné, were purchased through Christie’s. Says Brett Sherlock, Managing Director of Christie’s Canada: “It’s clear from the tableware Jackie uses in his restaurant, some of which he designed himself, that he’s passionate about ceramics. These pieces have definitely found the perfect home.” The Picassos will remain on permanent display for the ongoing enjoyment of customers, as will Chef Jackie’s nature-inspired photographs, which he captured throughout his many travels.

A delight for the palate

Rounding out Shoushin’s fine art collection is a bottle of Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6. Only 738 bottles exist worldwide. The second release of its kind, Rare Cask 42,6 is the culmination of a 100-year journey undertaken by the cellar masters for the House of Rémy Martin. Upon sampling this cognac, Chef Jackie sensed its potential as a pairing to his culinary dishes and chose to add it to the restaurant’s exquisite wine list, making Shoushin the only restaurant in Canada to currently offer this delicacy.

“The first taste from the LOUIS XIII Rare Cask 42,6 is definitely worth celebrating and commemorating. We are thrilled to have Chef Jackie and Shoushin be able to showcase the Rare Cask 42,6 along with his whimsical culinary art,” says Thomas Beraud-Sudreau, Country Manager of Rémy Martin, who gave Chef Jackie a set of Christophe Pillet crystal cognac glasses to pass on to whoever places the first Rare Cask order at Shoushin.

“Great art has the ability to delight all of our senses,” says Chef Jackie. “At Shoushin, we’re excited to bring culinary and visual art together and offer our guests a culturally rich dining experience in a truly one-of-a-kind setting.”
