Peter Workum: General Assembly May Prove Invaluable to Entrepreneurial Success

Only a year since its initial opening, many entrepreneurs have flocked to General Assembly-a unique educational community for startup professionals. Peter Workum, celebrated businessman, commends this approach and believes it can offer many benefit

For new entrepreneurs, finding the path to success and launching a company can prove difficult, especially in terms of where to find an education that will help fuel those dreams. While many may opt to study at a traditional institution for a degree in business, the process can isolate one from the actual market and delay participation within it. A recent article from Mashable.com showcases an alternative approach to startup academics called General Assembly. General Assembly is a campus where innovators can come together and learn from one another in terms of technology, design and entrepreneurship. Since its foundation, the resource has expanded to eight campuses across the globe and has enrolled over 14,000 participants. As an executive who has achieved multi-million dollar success from his own startup ventures, Peter Workum applauds this new approach.

In the article, General Assembly co-founder Adam Pritzker discusses why the method has been so successful. He notes that these campuses provide a place for practicing entrepreneurs to gather and learn from those who have found success in their own startups, adding a whole new level to the "learning by doing" process. Classes have been taught from those involved with the innovations behind Etsy, Google and Seamless. Instead of taking these fresh innovators out of the market by putting them in sheltering universities, the article notes, "General Assembly campuses have become epicenters of innovation and inspiration for the next generation of disrupters."

Peter Workum explains that this approach is so unique, because it allows for an "alternative forum for spontaneous education to occur in whatever form, all geared to help entrepreneurs find inspiration and attain or regain motivation." However, because of the young age of General Assembly, there is not a solid set of results that have shown that this educational approach is effective.

Still, Peter Workum believes that General Assembly's "face first" approach is one that the current business world needs. He concludes, "It will not work for everyone, but what does? It will be fascinating to see how graduates of General Assembly fare in the world of business. The integration of education, entrepreneurial encounter groups and business development is a great idea!"
