NWA Cancer Treatment Center Contributes to Study of Bioabsorbable Implant on Breast Cancer Treatment

Highlands Oncology Group Participates in Research of Implant to Target Radiation Therapy

Highlands Oncology Group, Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, collaborated on a study that focused on the use of a bioabsorbable implant on the targeting of radiation treatment in early stage breast cancer.

The study, entitled “The Impact of a Novel Bioabsorbable Implant on Radiation Treatment Planning for Breast Cancer,” found that in 95.7 percent of cases, the implant proved useful for radiation therapy planning.

This study found the use of a novel 3-dimensional marker as a safe and effective method for delineating the tumor bed with a significant utility for radiation treatment planning. With routine use of the device, shorter treatment time and a 25 percent reduction in treatment costs were observed.

BioZorb, created by Focal Therapeutics, is a small, three-dimensional marker used in women with early-stage breast cancer, according to the Focal Therapeutics website. It provides a target for aiming radiation therapy at the tumor site, which helps minimize damage to healthy tissue and it consists of an open framework structure that is slowly reabsorbed by the body over time.

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., according to breastcancer.org. About 12 percent of U.S. women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

In 2016, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed and 595,690 cancer deaths in the U.S., according to the ACS. As such, Highlands Oncology Group is committed to the betterment of cancer treatment.
