NWA Cancer Treatment Center Contributes to Breast Cancer Study Yielding Promising Results

Highlands Oncology Group Collaborated on Study of Breast Cancer Recurrence

Co-authors, J. Thaddeus Beck, MD and Highlands Oncology Group (Highlands), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer research group, collaborated on a series of collective research which studied breast cancer recurrence in participants undergoing aromatase inhibitor therapy.

The study, entitled “A randomized trial (MA.17R) of extending adjuvant letrozole for 5 years after completing an initial 5 years of aromatase inhibitor therapy alone or preceded by tamoxifen in postmenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer,” was presented at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in June.

The collective research found that extending aromatase inhibitor therapy from five to 10 years yielded positive results. Patients who extended therapy an additional five years had a 34 percent lower risk of recurrence. This trial was published in the June issue of The New England Journal of medicine.

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In 2016, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed and 595,690 cancer deaths in the U.S., according to the ACS.
