New "Second Skin"May Be the Future of Treatment for Under Eye Circles

Revolutionary treatment might come from a team at MIT

We don’t generally associate the innovators at MIT with aesthetic procedures, they’re much more highly tied to robots in the public imagination. But as Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center experts found, researchers at this home of technology have come up with something that might just offer a temporary and non-invasive solution to a longstanding problem - under eye hollows.

The new “second skin” technology was developed by Robert Langer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the preliminary reports on it were issued just last year. The polysiloxane polymer imitates the properties of young skin. To be clear, young skin is fundamentally different than old skin. Young skin has properties like light reflection, scattering, and elasticity. This “second skin” will hopefully eventually be attached directly to the skin that’s already there, creating a layer that’s imperceptible to the eye and impossible to feel for the wearer.

After nine years in development, this first incarnation of “second skin” has worked on subject’s skin for as long as twenty-four hours.  It’s been tested on areas of treatment including sagging skin on the neck and on under the eye hollows with promising results. It will be years before it hits the market, but it’s great to know that innovation in beauty is still happening. Someday sooner than you think, you might be able to walk into a medical spa to get a “second skin”. It’s only a matter of time.

In the meantime, the most popular treatment for under eye circles are injectable fillers. Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center offers under eye filler procedures with minimal discomfort and beautiful results. Here’s to a future in which new cosmetic technologies will allow for even better outcomes. The team at MIT deserves kudos for their diligence in developing these new technologies, and the public will surely be excited to try them when the time comes!
