New Novel Swimming Upstream Launched By Author Ruth Mancini

Are you one of life's survivors? Have you ever wondered why some people sail through life's peaks and troughs while others become 'mad, bad, or sad'? This theme is explored in the thought-provoking new novel Swimming Upstream by Ruth Mancini.

Against a backdrop of Cambridge and London in the 1990s, Swimming Upstream is the life-affirming and often humorous story of Lizzie, whose life takes a series of dramatic twists after she steps into the path of an oncoming car. Meanwhile, her two best friends, Catherine and Zara, have intriguing battles in their own lives.

Swimming Upstream sees a young woman overcoming obstacles in her search for happiness. It is also a story of female friendship, love and divided loyalties - and the moral choices people face when the chips are down.

About Ruth Mancini

Ruth Mancini was born in South London and educated at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University) and London Guildhall University where she gained a bachelors degree in French and Spanish and a post-graduate diploma in Law. Ruth lives in Oxford and is a practising criminal defence lawyer.

Says Ruth, "The inspiration for the novel came from a painful relationship break-up when events from my own past came rearing up to haunt me. Little did I know that the worst was yet to come. I have survived some pretty hard times but I know others, through my work as a lawyer, who have gone under in one way or another, and it made me wonder why. There is a lot of comfort to be had in setting your own precedent, in coming through hard times and knowing you can survive. Having friends helps. And that's what the story is about".
